More competition for fewer dollars

The New Jersey Gun Violence Research Center at Rutgers University, which funds outside research in addition to conducting its own, increased its grant awards from around $700,000 per year to $1.1 million in its most recent cycle. Michael Anestis, the center’s director, said he hopes to maintain that level going forward.

“It felt like the right thing to do,” Anestis said. The center received far more applications from researchers than usual, a shift he attributed largely to the disappearance of new federal funding opportunities.
