GVRC Funded Projects
Since February 2019, the NJ Gun Violence Research Center (GVRC) has supported internal research funding for faculty, doctoral students, and staff to advance rigorous, evidence-based scholarship on gun violence. Aligned with GVRC’s mission to serve as a center of excellence, funded projects span disciplines including public health, policy, and behavioral science. Awards are granted through a competitive RFP process to foster innovative approaches to prevention and intervention.
Projects were awarded from three different categories:
- Scholar grants supporting completion of a manuscript for peer-reviewed journal submission
- Grants supporting analysis of available gun violence related data
- Full-scale pilot studies.

Dan Semenza, PhD, the director of research at the GVRC, discusses his research projects on the impact of gun violence exposure on mental, physical, and behavioral health. Exposure to violence can affect our health in various ways—directly, such as being shot, or indirectly, for example, by knowing a victim or living in a violent neighborhood.
