Licensed firearm dealers, legal compliance, and local homicide: A Case Study

Objective:
This study uses a combination of tract-level and street network-level analyses to examine: (1) the overall association between federally licensed firearm dealers (FFLs) and homicides, (2) the relationship between dealers with serious violations (such as selling to prohibited buyers or failing to record sales) and homicide, and (3) whether the dealer–homicide association is moderated by community disadvantage.

Method:
Data for the current study come from three primary sources: police homicide data from Franklin County, Ohio, the number of FFL dealers from the ATF’s public database, and inspection reports provided by Brady’s gun dealer transparency project. These sources were combined with demographic data about Franklin County from the American Community Survey (ACS) and accessed via the National Historical And Geographic Information System (NHGIS). A total of 282 census tracts (i.e., neighborhoods) cover the project site, within which 183 licensed firearm dealers and 343 homicides existed between 2016 and 2018.
